When is Vat Savitri Puja

Vat Purnima or Vat Savitri Puja is celebrated in the Western states of India, such as Maharashtra, Gujrat and Karnataka.In this festival, women pray for the longevity and the prosperity of their husbands. While praying for the long lives of their husbands, they tie threads around the trunk of the banyan tree on this day. This is known as pipal puja. She is a popular figure as she had rescued her husband’s soul from the God of death, Lord Yama.

It is a common belief that vrat or fast blesses the devotees with a better life and good fortune. It is believed that by rigorously observing the fast, women are able to bring good luck and prosperity to their husbands; just the same way the legendary Savitri had brought back her husband from the jaws of death.
